The first release candidate for the upcoming MCNLive-VirtualCity edition is out. What's new?
IPB Image IPB Image
* The virtualization software VirtualBox OSE (Open Source Edition) is pre-installed. Create new Virtual Disk Images on a hard disk, run existing images stored on your hard disk. Requirements: enough RAM. Please give us some feedback, test and report bugs.
It's the first OSE version for Mandriva 2007 Official. korrel: you rock :-)
More info about this virtualization software: http://www.virtualbox.org
* A bunch of packages have been updated from the official MDV 2007 update mirrors, incl. the kernel (jmicron controller now detected?). Opera updated to version 9.10.
* Small changes to the mklivecd scripts and the 'Create Live USB' script. Added a special script for folks who have Flash Drives with non-valid MBR's.
* VirtualCity is an English only edition. The updates and VirtualBox made it necessary to remove the NL and FR localizations, in order to keep the size
small and to not break the copy2ram feature on boxes with 512 MB RAM.
* All features from Cherbourg are included. Known issue: the madwifi kernel module (for atheros based wifi chipsets) are not yet included.
* Download MCNLive VirtualCity here: : ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/man...ve/VirtualCity/

--chris

Edit:
* bug: does not boot from usb stick. My mistake, /me is stupid.

Does this mean you're going to create a virtualcity-version out of every release to come? This is not meant to be a replacement of Cherbourgh is it?

Downloaded it, running it. I tried as root to run a damn small linux cd, but it didn't recognize my cdrom. I was running MCNLive VirtualCity from within a VirtualBox session.

You are already running a kind of virtual sytem from CD, if you want to start a VirtualBox image, you can run run it from an iso file (stored on your hard disk.

Don't run as root. Run as guest. You should not run anything as root.

Does this mean you're going to create a virtualcity-version out of every release to come?

No. It's a new release, new edition. Not a replacement.

I know, but it didn't work as guest, so i thought maybe as root.

I would like to ask all testers who are not familiar with emulation/virtualisation to take the time to read the very comprehensive introduction to VirtualBox:

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/End-user_documentation

Download the User manual smile.gif

No, 256 MB is not enough to test the features of VirtualBox OSE on MCNLive. But it's more than enough to test the live cd itself.

I have tested VirtualCity with pleasure smile.gif
Here my results smile.gif
Gentoo livecd 2006.1 working in VirtualCity.
Note that I have only 768MB Ram memory and my vm worked pretty fast.
icon_idea.gif Kris!

I did not have any problems.

PS: my virtual machine looked better on my computer than on the screenshot ;).gif It seems some quality is lost.

Tested the VirtualCity release with a Windows XP-virtual machine I made on another PC.
Right now I'm running virtualBox with this Windows XP-image, it is running IE7 and I'm listening to Radio 10 Gold in streaming audio inside this virtual box. You can say it works!
It works like a charm on my 1 GB memory. The virtualBox-image uses 256 MB memory.

Kris,

I tested the new version with booting from liveCD and ran Win2003 Server perfectly... biggrin.gif

One problem: the LiveUSB that can be made on a stick doesn't work.
When the stick boots: it's say booting from USB/HD everything hangs for a couple of seconds and the all sort of errors appear in shell mode. With a stable unusable prompt at the end.

Could it be that the LiveUSB has f...ck..d ..p with the new release ?

My stick worked perfectly with previous releases. (without the new option to fix Mbr)
(i also made my version like i did with the older releases)

That is perfectly possible, monty. icon_cheesygrin.gif

Did not test it. Will do now. Thanks!

Found the cause. I keep doing stupid things to the sleep commands in linuxrc (mklivecd).

Will upload a modified initrd.gz which you can replace on the flash drive.
(it's just a quick fix, you won't be able to make a working remaster for a usb stick, for this you need to wait for the next version)

For those running from USB Flash drive. Download the following file, right click and save as:

http://home.tiscali.nl/berenstraat/mcnl/initrd.gz

Replace it on your USB stick. Don't forget to 'savely remove' of the device.
It works (again) on two tested systems.

Please note: if you want to do a remaster of this RC version in order to use it on a Flash Drive, please wait for the next version.

Can someone test/confirm that it works? Monty?
