I just went to the .org site and noticed a message from 08 stating that there were folks here and on the mandriva site working on updating the live remaster scripts for the 08 version (at least thats how i interpreted it to read)

is this true and was there success here?

I LOVED MCNLive and referred tons of folks, but after chris retired (sob) and i got promoted, things (from where i am) got side tracked.

anyone with news or new scripts i would LOVE some more information.

I know my last remaseter of 2007.1 was great, i was able to install to the HD, create a "live DVD" that not only allowed me to take my desktop anywhere, but it also allowed me to re install my desktop from scratch if need be, on a new pc!

I'd love to look at doing that for 2010 but anm so far out of date I'm not sure where to start

i know the unity folks have had some success, but they are still a ways off from letting out a stable release.

any info is appreciated!

Hi Jerome,

The scripts never worked on 2008.0 and on. So there hasn't been any MCNLive update since then.
We are still trying to make things work again. As a matter of fact, we have finally succeeded in creating a bootable-cd based on Mandriva 2010.0, but this was done not with the old mklivecd scripts but with new scripts, written from scratch here at MCNL. Because those scripts were written from scratch, loads of features that were common in MCNLive now still do not work. For example, we didn't succeed yet on installing the OS on this cd on harddisk and things like remastering are not possible yet.

Please make sure to check this forum every once in a while, so that when it finally does go public, you are one of the first people to know. smile.gif

King,

Thanks for the updates. Have you been following the hoings on at Unity Linux?

It 'appears" and i havent really delved too deeply into their scripts, that they are using a similar method to MCNL on Unity.

I have seen Unity, they have fixed mklivecd to work with mdv 2010.0, which is great. I we weren't already developing someting new ourselves we probably would have given that a try.

Problem with mklivecd though, is that it needs quite some work to get things working on each new Mandriva release. Work Kris used to do, but got tired off.
With our new set of scripts, we are trying to create something that keeps working with maybe just some minor changes on every MDV release so keeping it up-to-date would be a lot easier. But, before we get there, we first need to get things right in the first place. wink2.gif

Just to keep you posted:
In the meantime some problems are solved. The installer works fine now, booting from usb has been made possible and remastering works (but needs to be improved a bit to make the remaster work as good as the original).

We are testing the alpha's within our crew area, but the idea is to make the beta public so you would be able to test the new MCNLive before the final version.

I know that this is a sparse area now, but PLEASE let me know when you guys get to the beta point, I will jump in with both feet plus some!

I loved MCNL and still use it as a rescue tool when things go south.

Thanks for all your work.

Well, remastering seems to work quite well now, and we are even creating a simple graphical remaster script (not by far as neat as the original one, but at least it works). Someone even tested a remastered iso with Mandriva Seed to put it on a USB stick, which worked!

So... I think we can release a public beta pretty soon. We won't release it with loads of software preinstallerd, but with the remaster option at least you can easily create your own version with all the tools you long for. Besides, we don't have much time for Mandriva 2010.1 is already at alpha stage right now so we'd have to hurry up a bit. wink2.gif

We let you know, SOON. A lot of special functionalities from MCNLive are back - and working.

Good to have you back, Jerome.

The public beta is coming, but slightly delayed. As a small teaser, see this screenshot taken from the upcoming beta!
