Wondering whether this is the place this topic ...
Just to let you know that as for me the choice of programs within MCNLive (Voyager) is almost perfect, since gvim should be there now.
Please disregard my remark on "strings'', needed by 'lesspipe.sh'. This program is very small but extra libraries are needed.
If I may express a wish! Since many computers now have at least 512 RAM, can you foresee a 'copy2ram' option. No install on Hard Disk would then be required for reasons of speed.
Thank you.

Hi mzee,
I tried for three weeks to impliment this features in mklivecd and the LiveCD, with no luck. I am not a coder, and could not find help. This is exactly what I would love to have :-)
Yes, it's the good place for a wishes and requests topic.

I have coy2ram working on MCNLive !!!! I can't believe it. Writing this from a LiveCD without CD.
It is unbelievable fast, complete silence, the CD is not in the tray.

What I forgot to tell:
At the moment 440 BM cached :-)
So I think, everybody with 512 MB RAM should be fine.

The more I think about this, the better it gets. This would be a superfast system, right? So users that only need the software on this cd, could pop it in, use the copy2ram function, save documents on an external medium and have a complete new computer experience. I'm really anxious to test this.

Oh my god, this system is sooooo fast, and it also works without a problem on a USB stick.
(The only thing is, when you want to put it on the usb stick, you need once run the CD without the copy2ram option, and then use the usb stick to boot, and: livecd copy2ram)
It's faster than the system on my harddisk, it does not need to access the harddisk. RAM is faster than the harddisk.
I made a new iso, also with some updates, and some changes.
user mcnl is now French, root (English) has the original kde menu, firefox is replaced by opera 9 beta (incl. a bittorent client), urpmi --autoselect (community branch, with xorg update etc)
It's of course a test iso :-) Will uplaod it a s soon as possible and announce it here.
p.s. the process of copying everything into RAM lasts, on my computer:
* booted from a CD: 90 seconds
* booted from usb stick: 23 seconds
kris
Apr 28 2006, 11:34 PM
... and the best thing, when booting from usb stick and using the bootcode: livecd copy2ram, then the usb key is freed (unmounted), and later -without any interaction needed- is mounted again as a normal storage device, so that you can write to it. And we don't need a second partition to be able to write to it. Of course, one can also unplug the usb stick right after a message on the boot screen appears: "copying to ram, this can take a while -- ok" and the boot process continues.
Uploading the iso now. MCNLive-Cherbourg.iso

livecd copy2ram
is inderdaad de bootcode.
Eisen aan de computer: tenminste 512 MB RAM !! Omdat de hele 320 MB naar het geheugen wordt geladen.
Let op, op dit moment is alleen op belnet een goede iso:
ftp://ftp.belnet.be/pub/mirror/urpmidev.m...nllive/Montreal(nluug is niet in sync)

Man, this is fast! It feels like heaven.

I think I will be using this cd more often, with 2 GB ram this shouldn't be a problem. Great improvement, Chris!

For those who have not downloaded yet. The cherbourg version is an image of my play partition.
Not worth if you have download limits ;-)
Tonight I will upload the real version MCNLive-Leuven_v2.iso, with all fixes, updates, some improvements, which will have again the original NL and Frisian locale etc.
I just want to test now what happens if using the bootcode with 256 MB RAM, it should error out with a nice message :-)

Cherbourg is English/French, Opera 9 instead of Firefox, and updates and copy2ram.
Leuven_v2 will have all updates, fixes, copy2ram and the normal NL and EN locale, firefox.

Am very sorry to read this. Didn't have the opportunity to download it since not at home. Have some French-speaking friends who might be interested.
Please make it available again. Promise that I 'll test it thoroughly and let you have my comments.

Yes of course.

support for natural language.
I.e. for german speaking poeple.
Not necessarily inluded in ISO, but loadeable.
Sadly I can not install some DE-packages.
Support for more WLAN-cards.
Better integrated wpa-support, due to the odd wifi.

How to install/add additional languages:
