Hi, just wanted to let you know, I succesfully made a remaster of MCNLive, with Freevo 1.6.2

Here's a copy of my post on the Freevo-users list:
Hi,

I had some time left, and thought it would be nice to create a live cd for Freevo, based on Mandriva 2007.
This morning I created a remaster of MCNLive Cherbourg (a live Mandriva 2007 system, created by a member of the Dutch Mandrivaclub).

So now, after four hours of uploading (yes, sloooow connection), here it is:
http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/m.hoogervorst/FreevoLive/

Hope someone will like it ;-)

Bye, and a merry Christmas!!

This is an amazing remaster, HighKing icon_idea.gif

Took forever to download, but then: start it up, and wow!

I never really understood what a multimedia jukebox/multimedia center system is, now I know, laugh.gif.

I don't have a tv card nor a video-out/in so I could not use the watch TV feature, but the rest just works, watching videos, listening to music, browse photos/pictures, get news -

And it looks just great!

Wait: not only Freevo is included on this 375 MB. There is a menu item 'commands', and you are able to start the 'normal' KDE desktop. When you log out, you get back into the main Freevo menu.

(some minor cosmetical issues, but not important)

Great work, Michel! Congrats. And Merry Christmas. smile.gif

PS: The Freevo version is the newest, 1.6.2, just released on december 22. Packaged by korrel for MDV 2007 ?
HighKing
Indeed, the 1.6.2 version, packaged by Korrel is the one I installed. Korrel's package only has an old configuration file, so I took that from the original tar.gz package. (Thanks for bringing it up, I forgot to mention that on the webpage blush.gif, Korrel now stands under the 'Credits' part of the page ;).gif)

Glad you like it Chris, since you're the original author of MCNLive, this means a lot!! ;).gif
FYI: If you press 'd' in the main menu, you can choose another skin, I chose for the MediaPortal skin, 'cause I think this is simply the best looking one. ;).gif

I have seen Freevo on HighKing's pc/tv-screen
(at least I think it was Freevo, it looked very very Multimedia-station likish!)
I intend Freevo on my Mandriva2007 pc with a tv-card in the near future.

The idea of a liveCD is also interesting (for a first try) icon_idea.gif

That indeed was Freevo, with a picture of me and my wife being drunk at 'Kermis Warmenhuizen' on the background tongue.gif

It seems the remaster thing is starting to be a real succes smile.gif

Thanks, Highking. Looks great, will download it this afternoon.
Btw, does a pc with a tv-out option suffice to get FreevoLive up and running?
HighKing
In fact it doesn't realy matter if you're running with a vga monitor, or with a tv attached. That's the reason I chose to run Freevo on the framebuffer, and not from X, since that 'just works'. In X you need to play with your configuration to get tv-out to work, and framebuffer simply always works (don't ask me why tongue.gif)
Gul Dukat
Mmm, oke. Will give it a try then.

Can you explain something about the use of 'framebuffer'. I am not familiair with it at all.
After this weekend (in which I did a second Mandriva2007 install) I intend to install Mandriva2007 om a pc which has an TV-out on its graphical card and a TV (in) card. On this pc I intend to install Freevo.

I must confess that I don't understand much of the framebuffer device myself. What I do know, is that support for it should be compiled into the kernel, but as far as I know, all Mandriva kernels have it compiled in, so it's simply already there.

If you have a nice graphical boot, instead of grey text in front of a black background, you know the framebuffer device is working. smile.gif
If it is working, you don't have to do anything to run applications like Freevo, Mplayer, or SuperTux, that all support using the framebuffer, in it.

If you're not sure if it's working, just shut down X, and run a video in mplayer from the command-line. (just type 'mplayer myvideo.mpg')
RvP
When looking foor 'fb' at the rpm (urpmi) sources I see a lot of candy!
Also in combination with Xawtv running a tv-card without X (using the Xawtv configuration files).

Highking, I would like to test your remaster of mcnlive, but I can't download it sad.gif

I keep getting the message: "Alle downloads slots voor uw land (Other-Not Shown) zijn momenteel in gebruik. Probeer het opnieuw na een paar uur of installeer de Megaupload Toolbar voor directe toegang - met de toolbar geinstalleerd zijn er geen slot limieten meer voor u!"

Is it possible that it is like that because I live in Belgium instead of in the Netherlands? Or is that nonsense tongue.gif

Is there anyone facing the same problems? (Or has everybody installed the megaupload-toolbar?)

Any solutions?
HighKing
I have no idea... I'm not too fond of megaupload myself, but I don't have access to a public ftp, so this is a nice solution for spreading big files ;-)

I'm uploading a *new and improved* version as we speak... but since I have a sloooow Internet connection this will take up to midnight, so maybe it's an idea to wait until tomorrow? :-)
(The next version should be nicer to TV-cards smile.gif)
mr rogers
Well let's hope I can download the newest version tomorrow!

Busy day tomorrow. Upgrading Mandrake10 to Mandriva2007, (hopefully) parallel downloading FreevoLive.
Due to my bandwith it will take a morning or so. In the afternoon/evening I will play around with your newest release.

HighKing,

If you continue with this project, maybe we can host it too, like MCNLive. Since we are mirrored by NLUUG and Belnet, this gives people access to real fast downloadservers. smile.gif I will talk about this with my fellow admins.

That off-course would be great! icon_frown.gif
It won't matter much for me, because 30KB/s is the best I can get off of my cheap connection, but I think it will matter to people to download smile.gif

Did you talk about this yet?
Just got a pb from Ron that he tried downloading it several times, but megaupload didn't let him because the download slots for the Netherlands were fully in use... icon_cry.gif

Hello ,

I have same problem .. icon_cry.gif and megaupload-toolbar is only for internet explorer bye.gif

When I start my own livecd ( madbox ) , I don't have enought space on my website.
So I subscribe to TuxFamily : 100 Mo (website) and 1 Go (downloads repositories) .. and more if needed w00t.gif

Just registered, and made a project called freevolive.

Its awaiting validation right now smile.gif

The team is serious and very friendly.

validation is done quickly usually and you have a 'control panel' to manage your project ( stats , database , .. )

good continuation. and ready to test your livecd biggrin.gif

update:

Did you try GeeXboX 2.x..? it's based on freevo.

QUOTE
... The decision has been taken to make use of Freevo 2.0 (still work in progress, but so is GeeXboX 2.x) and Kaa, its multimedia framework as our new UI reference. As a consequence, many new packages had to be added (such as Python) to our distribution. In a near future, GeeXboX and Freevo projects will be more tighten than ever, and we should be the official Freevo LiveCD, still keeping in mind our embedded and easy-to-setup approach. ...

Uploading right now... should be there in about 1.5 hours
http://freevolive.tuxfamily.org/

I tried GeeXboX 2.x beta indeed. I believe the news about this beta came about a week after I started my FreevoLive project.
I like the fact that it's a very small cd (20MB), but don't realy like the fact it's only usable as-is. You can't make your own version off of it (well, with a lot of knowledge maybe you could). And of course TV is not enabled at all ;-)

Besides that, I think MCNLive is a nice base for something like this, if only because of the possibility to install it to harddisk / usb drive.
(Though I haven't tested to do those things with FreevoLive yet, as it's not at all finished tongue.gif)

Edit: It's there! biggrin.gif

Hello ,

This morning before leaving to work, I downloaded “freevolive”.
I have just tested it. Very good. icon_idea.gif

But I had some problems but not very serious.

Tv card works fine : ( lspci )
00:0a.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 11)
Subsystem: Pinnacle Systems Inc. PCTV pro (TV + FM stereo receiver)

00:0a.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 11)
Subsystem: Pinnacle Systems Inc. PCTV pro (TV + FM stereo receiver, audio section)

I don't know how you start freevo but I think you don't redirect error message ( or fb problem ? ):

IPB Image

Do you change keymap in freevo ? I can't get video and tv in fullscreen mode

[edit]
I have trouble at shutdown ( o_o ) .. no eject cdrom ?
All other menu work fine ( i don't test record and webserver ) .. good job icon_idea.gif

That's why it's v0.09 Muhahaha biggrin.gif

Yes, the bttv chip is autodetected and configured o.k. by harddrake, so this was working already in earlier versions.

I don't know how you start freevo but I think you don't redirect error message ( or fb problem ? ):
This is where the trouble start indeed. I just start 'freevo'. Nothing more.
I'm now testing on my dedicated Freevo box with 'freevo > /dev/null 2>&1', but after watching some TV, I still have the flickering cursor on screen standing in front of the graphics sad.gif
I have just no clue how to fix this... yet ;).gif

The reason I run Freevo in framebuffer, is that it simply always works, whereas X needs a bit configuration to make it work on a TV screen. Besides that, running without X makes it run faster biggrin.gif

Do you change keymap in freevo ? I can't get video and tv in fullscreen mode
What do you mean by changing the keymap? The problem of full screen video is something with Freevo...
Somehow, when I play video from the cli, typing just 'mplayer /name/of/the/video.mpg' it works, but when played from Freevo (which is just frontending for mplayer) the video suddenly is not played full screen.
Of course I could configure Freevo to pass streching to mplayer, so it is played full screen, but then my Athlon XP2000+ can't keep up.
Again, I have not found a solution for this yet.

I have trouble at shutdown ( o_o ) .. no eject cdrom ?
What exactly do you mean?
I don't know if MCNLive ejects the cdrom on shutdown? It's a simple remaster of MCNLive, nothing more, nothing less smile.gif

All other menu work fine ( i don't test record and webserver ) .. good job icon_idea.gif
Cool! smile.gif

From the FreevoLive .08 topic in the Dutch section of the forum, Chris told me you have done a live multimedia system based on MCNLive yourself. If you have any ideas on how to fix some of those bumps in the road, please share it with me smile.gif

MCNL live doet bij de shutdown een regel 'Medium oid verwijderen' Ik dacht in een eerdere versie dat zelfs het laadje open ging.
kris
MCNLive Cherbourg en VirtualCity doet standaard het volgende:
* je kiest shutdown computer vanuit KDE
* alles wordt keurig afgesloten, je ziet meldingen
* lade gaat automatisch open, je wordt gevraagd de cd eruit te halen en enter te drukken
* je drukt enter, en de lade gaat automatisch dicht
* computer powers down.

kris
Oops, this is the English version:

I explained the shutdown process of the standard MCNLive.
And asked Michel to open a topic about the new beta version 09. To get some testers.
RvP
Topic mag sowieso 0.9 heten
Topic may 'doobydoo' be named 0,9 icon_cheesygrin.gif

For our international visitors in 'Dinglish' (being English with a Dutch or german flavour)
HighKing
Kris, I think you're right. Never expected FreevoLive to be more then a funny test for myself, but the feedback I get about it only on this forum is great.
Looking a bit further then that, I can see on the download stats from megaupload that only about 20% is downloaded from the Netherlands and Belgium, the rest came from all over the world! biggrin.gif
This must mean that people don't download it just because they read about it on this forum, but maybe from the link in the Freevo wiki smile.gif

I'll open a new topic... tomorrow, not now 'cause I'm veeerrry tired sad.gif
