Works like a charm on my wife's machine Celeron 2.4 / 384MB / Intel onboard card.

Writing this with 3D effects enabled! Pretty!
Virtualbox works, but with this amount of memory I cannot run with copy2ram, and this machine has only 1 cd player.

Going to test it now on my laptop, wich has an atheros bases wifi card.

And here I am posting from my laptop, with an Atheros pcmcia wifi card!
Connected with wep-encryption btw, I'll try wpa later (gave that up about 1,5 years ago, but maybe it works by now).
The laptop is an Athlon 1200Mhz, with 256MB ram and SiS graphics and sound.

Had to burn the MCNLive cd on a normal cdr btw, because the laptop didn't like my new philips cdrw disks
But that's not a problem of MCNLive!

I hope that someone with a JMicron controler is able to give us a short feedback if the new kernel is doing fine now.

Additional info for people who are trying VirtualBox. The default for networking on the guest system is NAT and should work out of the box. Those who need bridged networking, please as root do a:

urpmi bridge-utils

on the host system. Will add it in the final.

VirtualCity-RC2 seems to work fine. Interested folks can download and use it without problems, though being a RC version. It is also suited for remastering. So, go ahead and create your own localized and/or enhanced and/or stripped down edition

For the final I'll be writing and including a short tutorial to virtualization and VirtualBox, add bridge-utils, and some very minor look&feel modifications.

Future plans for MCNLive. Farewell CDs - Hello Flash

I know this is a very simplistic question, so please excuse my naivete. But this version like the original, requires a 'remaster' when changes are made, is that right?

For example if i install Thunderbird, setup my email accounts and add my WIFI driver (Broadcomm 4318 YUK). In order for those to remain, I need to remaster it.

I noticed the FIX MBR function will move it to my 60GB passprt drive with GREAT ease and works VERY well.

But even on THAT device the OS needs to be remastered to maintain changes as described above, is that right?

Or am I missing a major feature release here?

The FIX MBR function is a GREAT idea, and really provides exactly what I was looking for in that aspect. Thanks

For system-wide changes: yes.

Still have not found a 100% secure and friendly method for this feature. All methos I found and could test are doing rather ugly things (in the background) to devices. I don't like that.

Just some additional comments.

The VirtualBox virtualisation software bundled in the new MCNLive is basically *the* solution for those who want a portable and full-featured OS (with all changes) on a removable device.

You create a new Virtual Harddisk Image (it is one big file) on the device, install your OS (for example MCNLive itself) there, so that you get a Virtual Machine, full featured. You can even have two or more different ones.

You start MCNLive (from cd or from usb), and you would open this virtual OS.
Storing your 'Virtual Machines' on a USB hard disk and carrying MCNLive VirtualCity (CD or usb stick) with you, you basically get a very impressive and powerful tool.
No dual-booting, no messing with MBR or partition tables, no need to modify the partitions ... and running the OS in almost native speed.

There is one disadvantage. You need a lot of internal memory on the box where you are using it. 512 MB is a bit low, 768 MB RAM is fine, it will fly with 1 GB RAM.

but you MAY have given me a way to travel to the folks and ONLY carry a flash or a DVD.

Heres my thought. Right now when I'm 'on call ' for the hospital, i have to carry my laptop wherever i go because of the VPN client.

BUT if i roll a version of MCNL with VBOX on it, I can install XP and ON that XP install my VPN and remsater THAT. and assuming the VPN connection works I can travel with a DVRW disc instead of a whole laptop. (since i know both my folks and the inlaws can boot drom optical but dont know about USB).

I igure it'll take a few weeks to put togetehr, but I'll let you know if it works

Currently there is a problem with the main MCNL server (down?). The final version is uploaded, but the mirroring to nluug en belnet does not work.

I hope that a admin or mod from MCNL can have a look at it.

Did anyone made a hostap network connection between host and guest machine ? (bridge function)

I tried everythink but can't get it to work.
I found 2 methods on this site and in the manual :

the following starts the virtual machines but doesn't make a connection und the guest :

the following gives a fault at startup of virtualbox :

both were run under root user.

Can anyone give a working sequence of commands which makes it work (on a DHCP router with IP adres 192.168.1.1)

my networkcard gets an automatic IP adres of 192.168.1.100.
