I know, I know, the pain is back.

I a REALLY excited about a particular application Virt City could have for myself and some of my co workers in our on call situation, but I keep running into issues.

Now I admit, that even though I printed and read the VC documents I'm not 100% sure about a few things, so this may be the actual issue, but heres what i'm trying.

I have MCNL-VC loaded from my Maxtor 60GB USB HD (which works GREAT BTW, thanks)
this leaves my cdrw and usb stick free.
I reate a Virt Machine and allow some of the defaults.
My PC has 1GB of ram so i leave 612 (although i have gone to 640MB) for the VM.
The Virtual HD I leave as defaul (i think its 9GB?)

I set my ISO source to my CDRW (although I have tried loading it from HD locations as well)

Then I start the install.

I've tried 3 different ISO's of XP and 2 of VISTA, they all start fine, take the serial #'s, detect HW etc.

he installs "copy files" and then the actual INSTALL starts.

They get 40-50% done and then BOMB.

No error messages, no lockups, the install STOPS the screen closes and when you try and run it (just in case it worked) you get "missing NTLDR"

I really want this to work (for several different reasons)

so if ANYONE has any ideas please feel free to throw them at me.

Linux makes mehumble if nothing else!

I am not sure why this happens.

What I don't understand:

* Do you start the installation from an iso file or the real win cd-rom?
* On which (real)file system do you create the image? And how big is the image?
* How do you partition the virtual fs (inside the image), which fs (FAT or NTFS?)

i created an ISO from the real install cd. I didnt think it would work from a regular install cd. I'm not sure WHY i think that, but I believe something i read led me to that conclusion

* On which (real)file system do you create the image? And how big is the image?

I have tried several FS. I have tried a Fat32 and a Reiserfs. As for the size, if i undertsnad the question properly 9GB

* How do you partition the virtual fs (inside the image), which fs (FAT or NTFS?)

I dont partition it, i allow the installer do it. but its NTFS

The size of a hd image on a FAT32 partition is limited to 4 GB. FAT32 can't handle a bigger file.
But it should not be a problem on a NTFS or ext3 FS I guess.

If you are installing from a (lets say) xpcd.iso, how is the rebooting handled while installing? I mean, if I can recall, I had to reboot in the middle of a Win XP install, and to finish the install from the CD itself.
I am puzzeld how to handle this when using a iso?

I would try to install from the original Win install CD. It's advised, I think, that you explicitely umount the CD on the host system before starting the install in vbox.
