Volledige versie: Remaster autostart of programs

Hi,

For all my remasters with mklivecd, when I boot three programs are automatically loaded: a shell, KWord and the storage devices window. Even though they are not open when I run mklivecd. Any ideas how to determine which programs are loaded at startup? Thanks!

That's odd. You should terminate all progs except the one terminal where you run the mklivecd command.
Try this, maybe they are running in the background.
run command: ksysguard

And kill the beasts.

I tried that, there was one instance of konquerer running which I killed, but no KWord. But after the remaster KWord and Konquerer will again autostart at boot. Strange. Is there any place where you can add programs to startup automatically (like the startup folder in Windows)? It's really a bit annoying... Thanks for your help!!!

There is a autostart directory but I doubt that this is the cause. Did you put anything in there:

/home/guest/.kde/Autostart

(.kde = hidden dir)

Are you working as root?

Do you get the same when you start with the orginal CD and remastering it?

What you can try. Run command: kcontrol
KDE components -> session management --> check: start with empty session,
logout and login again.

No it is empty.

>Are you working as root?

No not usually, the remaster is always done as non-root user. Does that matter?

>Do you get the same when you start with the orginal CD and remastering it?
It appeared early on, I can't remember when exactly but I will try it out.

Thanks, will give that a try.

May a bother you with this issue as well? My external USB hdd (NTFS ro) is mounted by default as permission "forbidden" to non-root users (owner is root). That is really inconvenient. How do you change the default mounting for it in terms of permissions? Changing permissions using the KDE menu didn't work.

Thanks for all your help!

You can't change this easily. It's a Mandriva/udev/KDE setting for all removable devices with a NTFS FS.
You would need to write your own udev rules or recompile the whole udev and KDE packages laugh.gif

A quick and the best workaround is to start a filemanager in SU mode, (entry in the menu), or you can
create a short cut on the desktop or place it in the system tray.

Menu -> system --> (something with files here, sorry I am on a German localized system here),
Filemanager SU
Just hold the left mouse button, go to an empty place on the desktop and release the mouse button, you get a question, say: Copy here

A tip: in your system tray is a field - run command.
You can start every application in admin/root/su mode in KDE with: kdesu <appname>
Example. Start kwrite as root: kdesu kwrite

Just to clarify something.

NTFS is a proprietary FS from Microsoft, even with a patent, if I am not mistaken.
Many linux distros won't even offer you, out of the box, 'reading' of NTFS.

Linux is a different OS. It uses 'open source' software and open tools and open FS.
It is not made to administrate a MS system.

I certainly understand your needs, but as long as MS refuses to work with open, compatible and standard FS's, I am afraid you must live with some inconvenient behaviour.

Or resize your NTFS partition, create a Linux ext3 partition on it smile.gif

Great, the last tip with Kcontrol worked, no more undesired autostarts! Thanks for the info on the mounting, will try it. Yes I am aware of the NTFS issues, MS sucks, so I am going for Linux, at least testing it out. Are you quite committed to MCNLive? Because I am really investing into it, so am hoping it will continue on and be updated.... smile.gif

Shot in the dark with the 'empty session' icon_cheesygrin.gif

MCNLive will continue. And updated regularly. It already exits since 2004.
We are in the process that new developers just joined the project. We'll get some cool stuff in the next edition.

PS: MCNLive is btw 100% Mandriva Linux. We are just building a Live system for specific needs and adding some scripts and features to it without breaking the compatibility.

Looking forward to that! By the way, will the next version feature KDE 4? When are you hoping to get it out? And...is there a way to upgrade without remastering? For me, MCNlive is all about the remaster feature. So, starting from scratch each time....doesn't sound so good... sad.gif

MCNLive is Mandriva. Next MDV --> hopefully some weeks later --> next MCNLive.

KDE4: the first alpha/beta version is to be expected at the end of this year. Noone knows when it will be out. So far, it is simply unusable for the average user.

Upgrading is only possible when you have a normal installed (to HD) system. A live system is never upgradable, sorry.

So, if I did want to upgrade I could do a temporary install to hard drive, update, then create a remaster on USB and remove my hard drive install, right? My question is, when I do a HDD install from my personal remastered version, will all my personalised system settings and downloaded programs be installed on the hard drive? Meaning, will the HDD install look and behave like my USB remaster?

Is there any information on how to upgrade a normal (HDD) install?
kris
This goes beyond the scope of MCNLive, I am sorry.

MCNLive is a Live system:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiveCD
http://www.mcnlive.org/mcnlive.htm

It is not a normal Linux distribution.

What is Linux and a linux distro:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution

Hundreds of different linux distros:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...x_distributions
http://www.distrowatch.com

You can't upgrade a live system.

I would like to ask you to use wikipedia and/or google for an introduction to Linux, packages, OS, distributions etc.
azenz
Sure, but if I would install MCNlive on the hard drive is it still a live system? Doesn't that change things?
