Volledige versie: Rolling your own from HD install

Ok, we all know i am light years BEHIND the learning curve here, but i really am trying.

I use MCNL pretty regularly as I travel and really like it, as stated in an earlier thread its the only thing I could get on my desktop this weekend.

So I'm cruising, I mean I REALLY like this, fast light, not bogged down, and I'm learning stuff!

SO last night I tried to remaster from my HD install.

The 1st time I tried i didnt log in as ROOT, but did SU at the CLI and got this error:

i used THIS command from the CLI:

mklivecd --verbose --root=/union --tmp=/mnt/hdb1/tmp /mnt/hdb1/live.iso

and things chugged along quite well. then I came back and saw this on the CLI:

Creating compressed image: [ 33.02% 00:06:51/00:20:49]Unmatched ( in regex; mark ed by <-- HERE in m/^mksquashfs: file //usr/share/apps/rosegarden/fonts/feta/10/accidentals-( <-- HERE . xpm, uncompressed size 424 bytes
$/ at /usr/sbin/mklivecd line 287, <CMP> line 35698.

So doing a little reading i decided that logging in as root and running the correct remaster would be a better idea.

SO FROM THE CLI IS USED:

mklivecd --verbose --bootmsg myboot.msg --bootkey F1=help2.msg --bootkey F2=myboot.msg live.iso

and once again things really started to rock! Beyond the typical MCNL install I have added GIMP, PAN, OOo, Thunderbird, Audacity,Rosegarden and their various setups.

when I came back later I found :

chmod 644 /tmp/mklivecd.6563/livecd/livecd.sqfs [100.00% 00:03:12/00:03:14]chmod: cannot access `/tmp/mklivecd.6563/livecd/livecd.sqfs': No such file or directory DIE
FATAL: Execution of 'chmod 644 /tmp/mklivecd.6563/livecd/livecd.sqfs' failed
[b]

Now I realize that if i Knew more about making your own LIVE CD's I'd probably be farther along, but i am reading a book on the subject, just havent gotten to the actual remaster section yet.

anyone having any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

as ive said before I think MCNL is an amazing product and shows some awesomeabilities.

Thanks

On a hd installed system: your first command was wrong!

The commands are explained in the html help files on MCNLive and online here:

http://www.mcnlive.org/howto_en.htm

Also, please follow the steps exactly. And check the amount of RAM, the used diskspace on a hd install (with df), clean your /tmp dir (maybe there is something left from a former trial), and check if you have -by mistake- overwritten the original included mklivecd scripts.
You don't log in as root, never! Login graphical as user, and su to root in a terminal.

Usually the error means that you are trying to build an iso file that is MUCH too big, either for the internal memory, or you are running out of space on your partition where you are trying to build the iso.

Usually when you want to build an iso, you are working on a hd install with only 'one' / partition (not a separate home, var etc partition).

Everything is explained in the howto.
And you might want to try:

Thanks for the suggestion kris,

i knew after it failed, that the 1st attempt was completely wrong, as for the 2nd attempt, thats the one that had me confused.

i will clean my TMP files, hadnt thought of that.

as for being too large for ram, i have 1.5gb RAM and 10gb swap, BUT i dont remember off the top of my head the partition that i was running it from, i was trying to save it to my 200gb emoty part, but looking at you suggestions i realize i was on the same drive.

thanks again, i'll let you know how it turns out!

Ok, so I did a complete reinstall, ran a test remaster and everything worked GREAT, then I added one account and 4 applications and things stopped working in the remastering again, thinking that ONE of the apps, OR the account I added was causing the issues, i decided to start iver from scratch and re roll at each step so i could isolate the culprit.

I reboootrd the pc and got the dreaded 9999999999 screen.

3 attempts at complete re installs later i finally went back to my PP media and lo and behold THAT seems to be working ok.

so now when i get home i'll install mklivecd and see how THAT goes.

i know that 9999999999999999 at boot isnt isolated to linux, but i dont remember what it means. i think its a non active MBR or something.

I am not sure if I understand what you are doing.

What do you install? MCNLive of something else? Where do you install it? How?
Where exactly do you store the iso? Do you run df before building an iso? Do you remove an already built iso before trying the next remaster?

laugh.gif, sorry, I just don't understand what you are doing ...

Installing mklivecd? Why that? What 'mklivecd' ? Where do you get from?
mklivecd are sscripts, they are included in MCNLive, if you install a different package/version, you won't be able to build remaster.

Please read the howto/documentation on my website.

And what is this 9999999 - is this about a remaster thing? What is the relation to remastering? I just don't get it.

Thats ok, I'm pretty tired, im on call for work this month so i dont always make a lot of sense

What do you install? MCNLive of something else? Where do you install it? How?

I have tried MCNL a few times and was REALLY happy with it on the HD, but as you saw yesterday, when i started trying to make ISO's from my HD installs i started having issues.

So I thought I would do a completely clean install of MCNL on my HD add a user account, annd create an ISO, install PAN< and create an ISO, install audacity, create an ISO and so on until I find what keeps blowing the system up.

The last time I installed a CLEAN MCNL to the HD I rebooted and hit the 999999 screen.

I tried 3 different clean installs, and kept coming up w/ the same issue.

Thats when I went to the 2k7PP install media.

When I left. THAT installed and created ONE account and rebooted successfully.

Where exactly do you store the iso? Do you run df before building an iso? Do you remove an already built iso before trying the next remaster?

I have several different HD's in the same box and as soon as i create the ISO I move it OFF the MCNL HD and move it to my data only drive. Yes I do df 1st. That i did lear from you guys smile.gif

Right, but I did find the scripts elsewhere, and since I currently have the PP edition installed, I wasnt going to assume that MDV included them.

Please read the howto/documentation on my website.

the 9999999 error is an abbreviation for what shows up on the screen when I reboot. Lines and Lines and Lines of 99's I dont believe this has anything to do w/ MCNL, thats why I allowed PP2k7 to take over, repartition and reformat the entore drive (as I had asked MCNL to do)

Okay, Jerome.

So, we are not talking about MCNLive.
With a normal Mandriva install you won't be able to master an iso. Please read the howto/docu on my website, the first sentences:

http://www.mcnlive.org/howto_en.htm

I just can't make it any more obvious. Really.

You just can't grab somewhere some obscure scripts (versions of mklivecd) and expect them to work on a normal MDV 2007 install.
They won't work. They don't work. They are broken.

When you have an install issue with MCNLive, then this is not a remaster problem.
Can you open a new topic? And try to be as verbose as possible. Thx.

actually I am working on a set of tools that some folks with Fedora are using in an attempt to be able to make a home brew Live ISO from MDV2k7.

But I am back working with MCNL.

For whatever reason my hard drive issues cleared up after I installed Power Pak, So I told MCNL to kill PP and do a clean install of MCNL and this far I have added 4 applications, changed the screen res, setup 3 mailboxes in Thunderbird, setup the PAN with my news servers AND created 2 ISO's as I went.

So things are progressing 1 step at a time.

Thanks.

You mean the Kadischi-tools? If this is true, I would be very interested to know how you plan to implement those tools in Mandriva 2007. Please keep me posted.
