Volledige versie: usb-startup hangs

I have installed MCNL Live to usb, using the menu-option. The install says it was successful. But now when I boot from usb, the startup always stops at the same moment, whatever bootoption I try. It stops at the following position:

searching for the loop image

Then the following messages are displayed:
/initrd/loopfs/bin/sed: not found
/initrd/loopfs/bin/cat: not found
/initrd/loopfs/lib/modules/2.6....../kernel: no such file or directory

and then the prompt appears....
When i take a look inside /initrd/loopfs it appears to be empty.

The image I installed it from is: MCNLive cd Virtualcity
The pc I'm running on is a Dell Dimension 4550

What you see can be:

* a problem with your USB port (and/or the BIOS). At this moment it looses the contact to your usb port and can't continue the boot process. What is a 'Dell Dimension 455' ? A desktop? A notebook?
You can try the bootcode: livecd irqpoll noapic
http://www.mcnlive.org/usblive.htm

* you had a bad download of the iso, something is corrupted

* Something else went wrong while setting up the usb key. Check all requirements.

Rocking: can you help me to improve either the help html pages on the live cd and /or the links in the browser/ and or my website.

I am getting over and over again the same questions, and usually it is solved very easily, but people either don't find the help, don't read or something else. What is it, what's wrong? How can we improve it?

1. The Dell 4550 is a desktop. I will try the bootcode indicated
2. Right now I'm downloading Cherbourg. I will try it to see if it makes some difference
3. I already installed the usb-stick thrice. I waited a long time for it to be sure al data was written to usb. I do not think this is the issue.
4. Of course I checked the html on the disk as well as the website. I think the links from the MCNL-forum to the website could be better, very hard to find (in fact I could not find them there at all). The forum of mcnl-live does not contain an item about installation, I think it can be organised better. Main items about installation, etc.

1. Makes no difference, the system halts anyway
2. This helps: I installed Mandriva on the usb from Cherbourg, and it works. I'm happy now biggrin.gif

Huh? Cherbourg and VirtualCity are no different in usb booting or scripts. Very strange biggrin.gif

In case someone finds this thread. Here are some BIOS tips, in particular on some old computers.
This is from the mcnlive website:

In the BIOS:

* FAST BOOT: off
* USB keyboard emulation: on
* Turn off USB Highspeed

Unplug any other USB mass storage devices, try also to unplug any external usb devices.

If nothing helps. Try a kernel bootcode, usually:
livecd irqpoll noapic nopcmcia
(there are some more ...)

* Try to use a combination of CD and usb key. Insert the CD. plug the usb key. Start the PC.
On the first screen type: livecd fromusb

PS: Thx, rockingbilly, I will try to improve the usability of the help pages. USB booting is still one of the most sensible and unreliable things in the computer world.

Perhaps the VirtualCity iso was damaged? The terminal (using shortcut in kicker) in VIrtualcity also did not start, in Cherbourg it does start correctly.
