Volledige versie: Problems remastering to FAT volume

When I run mklivecd with tmp and output directories located on a FAT drive I get these error messages:

.....
cp: failed to preserve ownership for `/mnt/win_e/tmp/mklivecd.533/initrd.dir/etc/udev': Operation not permitted
DIE FATAL: Execution of 'cp -a /union//etc/udev /mnt/win_e/tmp/mklivecd.533/initrd.dir/etc' failed

Does one have to have a Linux partition (ext2 or ext3) for remastering? I am asking because if someone with a Windows system would want to remaster he/she usually wouldn't have a Linux partition already configured, and doing so can mean wiping you whole system if your built-in hdd has only one partition...

You cannot do a remaster on a FAT partition, I believe this is because FAT doesn't understand how to create and use symlinks smile.gif

Open a browser on the running MCNLive, click on 'Howoto ....', scroll down to: Remaster.

My theory is that people never read how to's. I am thinking of skipping them altogether. icon_cheesygrin.gif

Hi Christ,

I did read the howto smile.gif. Several times. And please don't scrap it...!

I assume what you are hinting at here (since the howto you mentioned doesn't directly answer the question I posted) is that I might be able to simply directly remaster in the RAM, using the RAM as my tmp and output folder. Now....my remaster is about 850 MB in size, I got 2 GB Ram and a 1 GB swap. Do you think that would work?

The howto very clear states that you 'have to use a Linux partition'. That is the answer to your question.

Your RAM is not enough. You don't believe me? Try it. In the mklivecd command just leave out the tmp argument, and the last argument without the harddisk location.
Read in a terminal: mklivecd --help

But you can use a NTFS partition for remastering. Just make sure to mount it read-write before you start.

That's what I figured, since I seem to need about 1.7G space or so on my hdd to remaster, i.e. twice the size of the remaster.

Want to hear a story?

With every new release I get emails from users. Usually the first emails are:
What are the passwords?

The user/root names and the passwords are written on:

* the first screen when you start the live cd
* the desktop wallpaper

And still people don't 'see' it. I wonder what would happen if I would let start the live cd with an annoying very high pitched sound file: THE PASSWORD for ROOT is :::: The PASSWORD for GUEST is :::

My theory: it would not help. They just don't listen icon_cheesygrin.gif

Someone mailed me with the same question on the FL list, but I simply have forgotten to mention it anywhere icon_cheesygrin.gif
