I am a newbie and having problems getting my external mic to work on a live system that is booted from a usb hard drive. My sound card driver is snd-hda-intel. I have opened KMix and the input settings for capture are turned on to level 79, as well as the input settings for capture mux turned on to lever 3. I can't seem to get the built in mic to work either.

I can play cds or mp3s on Amarok with no sound problems.

While trying to record sound in Audacity sound editor, I cannot sucessfully record sound from the built in mic or external mic. It seems to record, then when I play back I get an error, "Error while opening sound decive. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate".

My goal is to use skype on this linux system. While testing skype using the echo123 calls - there is nothing being recorded either on my external or internal mic. I have no problems using this external mic when I boot up this pc with XP.

Any help would be appreciated - I would like to move away from XP asap! icon_cheesygrin.gif

Hi John,

Close audacity.
Try to go to the KDE Control Center (run command: kcontrol, or menu --> system --> configuration ...), --> sound & multimedia --> sound system, here uncheck 'activate sound system'
(actually it will disable arts , it won't disable your sound).

Then start audacity again.

Maybe this works. I am not sure, though.

Hi Kris,

Regarding:
menu --> system --> configuration ...), --> sound & multimedia --> sound system, here uncheck 'activate sound system'

My version says "Enable the sound system" which I unchecked and then opened Audacity sound editor again still cannot record any sound. On the hardware tab, for the "select audio device" it has "autodetect" by default.

I went to another sound config at menu --> system --> configuration ...), --> kde --> hardware -->sound, and show this info:
Sound driver: 3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.12 emulation mode)
Installed drivers: Type10: ALSA emulation
card config: HDA Intel at 0xdfebc000 irq16
audio devices: 0:STAC92xx Analog (Duplex)
syth devices & midi devices - not enabled in config

Do you have any other ideas on this?

John

John, you were right with the kcontrol naming. Sorry, I had a diffrent language installed. blush.gif

Unfortunately I have no idea what is going wrong.

If you happen to have a Dell laptop -with this problem- this is prossibly a more serious driver problem. And you would need to wait for the next MCNLive edition with an updated alsa version.

But I am unsure about it. Maybe someone with more mic and audacity experience could help further.

Don't know what 's wrong, but I got the following personal message:

Kris,
I do have a dell latop - inspiron 1300.

Do you know if mandriva full install (non live version) has an issue with sound card drivers as well? John

Think it must be some mistake so I post it where it belongs ;).gif.

Btw driver issues are quite common, and so are soundcard driver issues. It happens most often with new cards which is mainly caused by the companies building those cards forgetting developing linux drivers. Mostly it won't take very long to find a solution from within the community. So it can be the issue is solved by a full install, but that's not for sure - I think likely it is or will be very soon.

I think there went something wrong, because i got a PB from John Willis with the following:

John --- in this case I am afraid a normal MDV 2007 install won't solve the problem. But within a few days we expect the next MDV 2007.1 edition. And a MDV live cd will be available so that you can test it.

Thanks for the news about a new MDV version coming out soon. I apoligize for the mistake in sending my last one to the moderators - I don't know Dutch and I somehow pushed the wrong button!

It is great to be looked after as a newbie on linux.

I booted my wife's dell inspiron 9300 laptop last night using my MCNLive external drive. The mic works on her laptop so this tells me the issue is likely with the driver capabtibilty for my soundcard on my dell inspiron 1300 laptop. I see that MDV 2007.1 edition is out - where and when do I look for the new MCNLive 2007.1 to test my mic again? biggrin.gif

It's not out yet (but 'the mcnl mistress' is working on it! w00t.gif)
