Hi all, I think Delft is fantastic, especially the way to make it permanent on USB.
I can run Delft from CD, but loading from USBkey stops on login:
Neither guest or root is accepted.
I didn't have this problem running Virtualcity from USBkey.
Any suggestion?

Do you start with 'livecd persist' ? And did you make some changes that could cause this?
What kind of keyboard?

Do you have the same problem when starting without any cheatcodes?
It should not prompt at all, and should go straight loading kde.

No, I just load on the USBkey the fresh basic system without any change.

> And did you make some changes that could cause this?
No, I did not

German keyboard on thinkpad T40

In fact, I did the same with Virtualcity on USBkey witouth any login
kris
Ah, it's a ThinkPad, a notebook.
That could be a usb port problem.

We need to find a kernel boot parameter for you.

Your choices are:

livecd noapic nolapic acpi=off irqpoll

Try them all.

If this does not help, try the following.
Start with: livecd init 3
login as user: guest
(with password: guest)
type: startx

Also, could you tell us the video adapter, video chip?

I tried all of these bootcommands, none worked.
Always I was prompted to login, and never guest or root worked.

What's the matter about keyboard?
It was changed with a new one, now german, was american before.
Anyway, with this german keyboard, I have no problem with Virtualcity USB and Delft CD.

My video card is ATI radeon 7500 (mobility MY LW)

This will give you at least an error message ...

Please try it.
I have no idea what's going on.

Something with numlock? With the German layout - but it is the same on the CD. Really weird.

The only difference is the plugged in usb stick -- so it has something to do with usb.

Thank you for your patience.
īlivecd init 3ī propted also to login, but guest again was not accepted.

I finally almost solved reformatting the USBkey (actually a 512compact flash with USB adapter) and running again the wizard to create the USBlive.
I said almost, because now I cannot boot directly from USB (before I could) but I have to boot from CD with the bootcode īlive fromusbī.

I formatted only one partition as FAT32, maybe I missed something?
In the wizard "Be sure that the boot flag is set on the first partition", how to set it?

I suspect that you have a similiar problem as described here:

http://www.mandrivaclub.nl/site/index.php?showtopic=8443

Please follow the steps there, and give here the output of:

QUOTE

fdisk -l /dev/sdX

where X is either a or b or c ...

(When you format the stick with the MCC, the bootflag is set automatically on the first partition)

kris
.. just to add some info.

I have a pretty damaged usb stick here at home, which I can use without problems to store data etc. But the sectors are damaged and I can't boot with it.
It is a real hardware damage, which is not to solve with reformatting.

This was the result of unplugging the stick while data were transfered (the light was blinking).

Hi Kris, I did, looks like I have the same exact problem as that thread:

Disk /dev/sda1: 509 MB, 509935104 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 61 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

This doesn't look like a partition table
Probably you selected the wrong device.

Partition table entries are not in disk order
[root@localhost guest]#

Therefore, as you suggested there, Iīll format again the USBkey, even if I just did it.
Letīs see....
pilotaviola
Now I have this result

Disk /dev/sda1: 509 MB, 509935104 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 61 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
[root@localhost guest]#

It looks better, now Iīm loading the USB live wizard

pilotaviola
No.
After running the wizard, using the root command I obtained again the previous "wrong device etc"
error message.
I tried anyway to boot from USB: again is possible only boot from CD then, livecd fromusb.

I guess maybe you are right in your second message, some damage on the (compact) flash card made impossible boot from usb. Itīs a pity.
The weird itīs: I was able using Virtualcity, maybe the damage was after using it....
How to know it for sure?

You don't have a partition on the stick !

That's why you get the error message while running the wizard. He can't find the partition.

Did you create a partition? And format it? Two steps.

(Running VirtualCity does not damage the stick, it does not write anything per default ...)

Yes, I did the two steps. Actually, I had no error message while running the wizard: instead, seems to complete correctly the USBlive.
I donīt know how to upload a screen snapshot here, but MCC shows correctly a single blue FAT32 partition, with these details:
mountpoint: /mnt/win_c
device: sda1
DOS drive letters: C (just a guess)
Type: FAT32
Size: 486 (99%)
Mounted

Anyway, Iīll format again and try to load the new Toronto distro!
Thank you very much for your kind support

kris
You had a partition, but it was not formatted.

The output of fdisk showed this. I wrote that in Linux creating a partition and formatting are two steps.

If you prefer Windows to format the drive, please use Windows, there it is one step, I think.

Actually, I broken my hard drive with windows ad mandriva, that's why I am using MCNlive: I have my data on an ethernet hard drive, so, if I could run MCNlive in permanent mode, I can skip buying an internal hd......it would be great!

Now, using MCC (in MCNlive toronto from CD) I deleted again the partition, created another one, then click format, and after two seconds he says formatted. Too fast?
If I check this partition with the terminal command you gave me, I have the previous message. Are you sure not formatted? I can format it using a terminal command as in DOS?

Then I run the USBlive wizard and when appear OK i click on it, wait some second, reboot the system removing the CD. But again, not possible run from USB (he says no OS), but possible using CD with the option livecd fromusb.

I don't want to drive you crazy, you have for sure more interesting things to do, but if you could help me maybe will be useful also for other people......
Thank you so much!
kris
You don't drive me crazy. biggrin.gif
It's a challenge to get this damn usb stick to boot !

Ok, the last time you posted here the output of a certain command you did not post the whole section.

Please do the following, and do it exactly!

1. Boot with the CD, the usb stick is NOT plugged in.
2. When you are in graphical mode, plug it in. Wait three second.
3. Open a terminal.
4. Type: mount
---> Post here everything what you see on your terminal, the command too! Copy&paste, don't type!

5. Identitfy which device is your usb stick, I am assuming it is /dev/sda
(please note, I am asking for the DEVICE, not for a partition on the device!!)

6. Type:

CODE
su
fdisk -l /dev/sda

If your device is /dev/sdb, then type it accordingly.

Do you see this?

The first partition is: /dev/sda1

The boot flag ( = * ) is not set on this partition!

You have an odd 2. and more partitions, /dev/sda2 _with_ a bootflag. Your BIOS will try to boot from _this_ partition not from the first.

Now, you need to delete ALL partitions, delete the first partition, re-create the first partition, format it.
When you do this with mcnlive in the MCC you can push the button 'toggle to expert mode', to be sure that you see all options.

If you have problems with MCC (Mandriva Control Center) you can do:

QUOTE
su
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M count=2

This will erase the first 2 MB on the usb stick and overwrite the partition table.
Afterwards you can create a partition and format it.
Be sure that sda is your usb stick and NOT an internal harddisk!!!

When you are done, please again control it with the command:
su
fdisk -l /dev/sda

Are you kidding me or talking seriously?
I think the linux people have an open mind, therefore I cannot rule out the second one......

It's a long history, but started funny: when, some months ago, I came here in USA, I was used to drink the short italian espresso, not the long (and very hot) Starbucuks coffee.
That's why, drinking while typing on my notebook, my lips was burned and the keyboard drunk some coffee!

While I saved the motherboard changing just the keyboard (only Thinkpad can do), in the meantime I used the HD in a USB box from a friend's notebook.
It worked some weeks, but suddenly died, maybe I forgot 'safetly remove" in windows....

I was careless twice!
