Volledige versie: any plans for 2008?

Chris,Kris?

Any plans for a new release when 2008 becomes final later this month?

or have the questions worn you out?

I thought at one time that you said you wee working on something that did not include mklivecd, but it could have been something else.

Anyway, I always enjoy your releases, and as I learn more and more, I enjoy them more and more@

Chris has done some work rewriting the old mklivecd code, which I believe now works fine with 2007.1
For 2008.0, she would have a lot of work again, figuring out what the changes are, and which changes would be necessary to be made to the mklivecd code.
That's the main reason MCNLive is not created direcly after the main release.

Besides that, MCNLive has not directly anything to do with Mandriva. It's a project, a live cd created off of a clean Mandriva install, not a part of the Mandriva distribution.

I hope this answers your question? smile.gif

sort of, the other part was whether she was UP to it, or whether bookie and I had worn her out with stupid questions yet ;).gif

I am waiting for the MDV 2008 final. Have not done yet any tests. We'll have some major changes, in the code.
Meanwhile I took a sort of outtime from Linux, sort of. icon_cheesygrin.gif Enjoing other things icon_cool.gif

So....with Mandriva 2008 now out the question is when the exciting new MCNLive version might approx. be available? Any rough ideas yet? smile.gif
kris
Just today I have installed the new MDV 2008 as my main system. It is working great so far.
Please a bit patience.

I need to install a second system and then start to rework the mklivecd scripts.

Chris, glad to read you are there, working on a new MCNL liveCD. In another post I wrote : "waiting for Chris' new masterpiece"...

If you allow me : is there a means to have a poor man's install of the 'mandriva-linux-2008-one-KDE-cdrom-i586.iso'? So I could do some testing, wating for your LiveCD to become available.

Just repeating : I have been using Delft since it came out nearly each and every day. And it never let me down. So I expect a lot of the new one ... But I am maybe like a spoiled child waiting for his new toy / tool!

Best Regards

HighKing
Why the hurry, if Delft is still working fine for you? smile.gif

You have to understand, that Kris can only work on the mklivecd scripts in her spare time, and that she's maintaining the scripts for Mandriva totally on her own.
That's why you can never expect a MCNLive version very soon after the final Mandriva release.

Off course we all would like to see an MCNLive release off 2008, but please be a bit more patient ;).gif
kris
Please folks, a bit of patience.
This time I did not follow the cooker/development of MDV 2008, and I was still running 2007.0 (that is the OLD MDV 2007 version, not Spring) on my main system. Let me have at least a few days fun with the new 2008 :-) In fact I was not busy with Linux at all ...
Also, I would like to discover the small bugs/annoyances and how to change these things for MCNLive.
And of course the new features, too.

fun:
I just learned how to convert a .flv video to mpg, in one command, with ffmpeg, libffmpeg, liblame and lame from PLF, in good video and audio quality:

CODE
ffmpeg -i video.flv -s 480x360 -acodec mp3 -ab 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 test.mpg]

Oh no worries smile.gif, was just wondering whether it is going to be a matter of weeks or rather months.

Aim was to show I appreciate the job Chris is doing. Don't worry : I am patient.. And am confident the new LiveCD will only be released after due testing.

And also there was a question : "is there a means to have a poor man's install of the 'mandriva-linux-2008-one-KDE-cdrom-i586.iso'?". Should I open a new topic?

Regards,

Not possible with MDV One.

Hi Chris
my name is charles --> mcclive

I do not speak English but understand it a bit with imtranslator (firefox extension)

I could make a version 2008 with mklivecd
and the scripts of mcnlive

Then I hope that you will test this version so that you can go on mcnlive and make a version 2008 for the comunauté mandriva.

http://download.tuxfamily.org/mcc/mcclive/2008/

mcclive-2008-fortesting-beta.iso

This version is to remaster 2008 with ONE KDE.
But not much do not become established because draklive-install require modifications to work.

Also I can give you all information to make mcnlive on 2008
because it is a good version that you made with Toronto.

Then I hope for a new version and user also. smile.gif

charlesm

New scripts mklivecd are here

easy for Chris to construct new MCNLIVE version on 2008

I do not speak English, it is very difficult for me.

Sigh. rolleyes.gif

It seems that I just can't get out of this MCNLive project. Oh my.

Charles, the last months I managed to not read any forum.

Then you answered on my blog. I can't resist French charme. wub.gif

I am downloading your version now. I'll take a look. But I AM NOT PROMISING ANYTHING biggrin.gif

Good Job, Charles! Excellent biggrin.gif

Yes, I saw how you managed the loading of the kernel modules. You took it from MDV One :-)

Everything is working fine, in VirtualBox and on my desktop which has a pata/libata CD rom. It is 'now' /dev/hdc, laugh.gif.
Also the internal sata HD is now configured as /dev/hda, on the livecd while it is /dev/sda on my installed 2008 system.
Do you know why?

For the hwdetect: you went back to the old hardware detection. No automatic harddrake option?

For the Dutch folks here - I don't give up the hope that someone will continue the project tongue.gif:

All basic stuff is working. Only some small things to work on, but they are peanuts. Charles did a great job.

Keep on posting the most important changes and differences, Charles, please. And don't hesitate to post in French.

I can see them in the scripts, but for others it is easier to follow when they are aware of the changes.

Thanks!

Tested my laptop --> (normal option) livecd = ok (video card= Card:Intel 810 and later)

The hwdetect --> Toronto is very good

it's me, i have not use the good option with my old computeur--> wall.gif

kris
I would like to wish you a Happy New Year, Bonne année!

Good, you could solve the hwdetect issue.

PS: for the MCNLive hwdetect two things are important. In the mklivecd script (creating the iso), this has to be done:

CODE
    create_initrd();
             if (-e "$o_root/etc/init.d/harddrake") {
             Storable::store({ UNKNOWN => {} }, "$o_root/etc/sysconfig/harddrake2/previous_hw");
                     run_program::rooted($o_root, "chkconfig", "--add", "harddrake");

It cleans the stored hardware info on the target system, and it makes sure that the harddrake service is running on the target system.

In your version of mklivecd, Charles, this code is removed.
charlesm
Ok Chris,

Thanks icon_idea.gif

because, my mklivecd versiont=pclinuxOs, this section of code is not present.

I had not seen this difference. now yes
In section mklivecd
CODE
Main:  {
        create_initrd();

I correct this missing of code

Happy New Year, to you also, bonne année à vous aussi

There IS a working mklivecd script, by Charles. And a working live cd. Read back in the thread. Only some small adjustments are needed. Charles could make, now that the hwdetect issue is solved, a new version though.
The main problem is that nobody here from mandrivaclub.nl is interested to help, as far as I can see.

I don't think that's true.
The most just don't understand how those things work (me included).

Off course I'm able to create a livecd with a working mklivecd script, but I have no clue how things work inside the script.
The greatest problem here, is time... I just don't have the time anymore to learn all those things very soon (as one should dedicate quite some time for this).
Learning every day, but not fast enough for this... sad.gif
kris
Yep, thats what I wanted to say with "no interest': no time etc.

Same here for me. I am not going to start again with MCNLive.

And regarding the scripts: time & interests --> everybody can learn how these scripts work.
But here on MCNL there is simply nobody, you know that I tried more than once finding people to join the project.

Happy New Year, btw cheekkiss.gif

it is very long to write and translate.

I removed of the repository (tuxfamily) iso of testing.
Every day I test news iso with new kernel.
With the kernel mdv(livecd mode) the dma is not active on the hard disk.(exemple hdparm -tT on maxtor ata disk = 3 MB/sec)

i make new iso with new kernel -> my maxtor run 17 MB/ sec dma is active.
The new iso testing with aufs (another unionfs) for better performance.

soon, upload the new iso for testing in the repository (tuxfamily)

HighKing
Charles, could you upload your current mklivecd version again?
Then we could give it a try. Maybe there are some things we can help you to test?

I hope babelfish did a good job translation the above, since I don't speak a word french:
Charles, pourriez-vous télécharger votre version courante de mklivecd encore ? Alors nous pourrions lui donner un essai. Peut-être il y a quelques choses que nous peut vous aider à examiner ?

laugh.gif
charlesm
I prepare news iso with the new kernel, because the basic kernel mdv is not good for my version or MCNLive.
Look the new comunity PCLOS gnome version. Texstar make a good kernel for livecd

i have download source kernel(texstar dev) and compile the new kernel with aufs and adapte this week the new mklivecd=mixed (pclos based and MCNlive based), after week upload iso and new script in repository with new kernel compiled and source.
smile.gif

Kris will make new MCClive, ok wub.gif
charlesm
I think that I understood why the kernel mdv does not work well in livecd mode for mklivecd 2008.
It is necessary to re-compile the kernel and to put good options.
It is simple, it is necessary to look at the .config file in the source kernel and to compare small difference between (M) and (*) in the .config file.
Now I must take time to compare difference this between the kernel mdv and the kernel pclos.

As charlesm has taken his mklivecd offline already, I have experimented a bit with the mklivecd script (and the corresponding linuxrc and rc.sysinit scripts) from Toronto.
At first it failed to copy insmod-25 which is not present on 2008.0. So I changed the mklivecd code to copy insmod instead.

This didn't work either, because both insmod and modprobe said they needed libz.so.1
So, I edited mklivecd again, to include libz.so.1.2.3 as libz.so.1

This worked. Now it started to load some kernel modules. But, it failed miserably on ide-cd, which depends on the ide-core module, which was not copied to initrd. So again I've edited mklivecd to include the ide-core module.

Now loading of modules went fine, but it complained about mdev not being present. So I installed the earlier created busybox rpm which has mdev included. That made the complains go away laugh.gif

The biggest problem I see now, is that the ide drives (including the cdrom) are not present in /dev, so the system is unable to mount the cd, and therefor cannot reach the livecd.sqfs file... I haven't found a solution for that problem... I just have no idea why the devices are not created in /dev... sad.gif
What I did find, is that the MDV 2007.1 kernel has the ide devices in /proc/ide/idexx, but under 2008.0 there is only a file called 'drivers' in /proc/ide... linuxrc seems to seek the ide ports in that place, so that might be part of the problem.

I have looked into linuxrc and rc.sysinit, which gave me some idea on how the boot process works, but I didn't find a solution yet... my wife now starts to complain that I've spended too much time behind the computer this weekend, so I stop at this point, so I can spend a few hours with her laugh.gif
HighKing
Yesterday evening I gave it another try. I'll post this from the head, as I'm at work now, and don't have access to the files at home.
I believe it was complaining about mdev , simply because udevstart was not there.
On my MDV 2008.0 system, udevstart indeed does not exist.

What does exist, is a script called start_udev, but this is a bash script, with functions that don't work within Busybox ash.
I tried to remove some functions so it would work, and I got it to fill /dev with loads of devices, but no hdx/sdx, and thus no cdrom... sad.gif

I tried to copy all udev files from the Toronto initrd, but with the same results (loads of files in /dev, but no hdx/sdx).

icon_mad.gif

Could someone tell me if I'm on the right path?
What I believe the linuxrc and rc.sysinit scripts from Toronto do is this:
1. Boot with the initrd image as root.
2. Load kernel modules needed to get to the cdrom
3. Fill /dev
4. Mount the cdrom
5. Find the livecd.sqfs file, and mount it
6. Load unionfs from within the livecd.sqfs image, and merge the squashfs root with the initrd root.
7. Start the actual boot process.
charlesm
Because the kernel mdv compiled with the new option, ide-core is not a static module in the vmlinuz.
The udevstar is not présent in the 2008 because it 's changed for the new script start_udev -> depend -> udev and makedev
makedev not run in the linuxrc because a perl script a depend ->libdrakx

copy old udevstar the 2007 in the 2008 because pclos 2008 run udevstar in the livecd.

I have not compliled à new kernel mdv juste make new iso for testing in the kernel pclos 2.6.23.11.

This kernel it's good for 2008, I can make an upload of kernel-2.6.23.11.tar.gz for testing

my new livecd run correcly juste the new script sysinit and the halt file not run correctly.

Did that, with the same result as chaning the udev_start script.

I have tested with the ide-core module in the initrd.gz -> old iso for testing retired because is not good, impossible active dma,

With the kernel mdv actually is not possible run mklivecd correctly because the kernel mdv compiled for use draklive, or draklive use probe-modules -> probe-modules is drakx-installer-binaries-probe.rpm .

the probe-module look the idect-lst and load the corect module for chipset.

Look initrd.gz the mdv One extract initrd.part in the initrd.gz and mount initrd.part.

exemple create a new dir in the dir mnt

mkdir /mnt/testing

copy initrd.part in the /mnt/testing and mount initrd.part

CODE
mount -t ext2 initrd.part /mnt/testing -o loop

and look the linuxrc the mdv One for understand the fonction of the probe-module.

The new kernel mdv compiled for use draklive, is finish create livecd with mklivecd for 2008 .

For use draklive or compile the kernel mdv with the good option for use mklivecd.

Texstar -> the pclos derived Mandriva compile the correct kernel for mklivecd -> the kernel it's must important.

The kernel mdv is brided for use draklive, is not a accusation just a constat.

Is not a new kernel not run for old computer just compiled for 586, 686 or laptop , for run old computer with compile the kernel with good option for 386 and run .

Charles,

I have a little time this weeks and may have some over the next 2 weeks as well.

I started to follow through on this thread, but noticed that you have taken down your sources and iso's that you had refered to earlier in the post.

Although it aooears as though you have a LOT of great stuff up there.

Is there anyway to get copies of your current work?

If nothing else I know I should have the time to deveop some documentation fkr it.

Either way, thanks for all the progress you've been making there may be hope for 2008 yet!
